BIG FAMILY Statues

The gigantic iron sculptures are iconic of the philosophy of Comuna. The set, located in Pedra do Tatu, consists of seven figures that weigh 6 tons and are 9 meters high.

With a total weight of almost 84 tons and extraordinary dimensions, the sculptures required special transportation to cover the distance between California and Minas Gerais.

BEAUTY & THE CRY OF HOPE FOR A BETTER WORLD

BURNING MAN FESTIVAL

The sculptures, created by KAREN CUSOLITO from recycled materials and remnants of demolished objects, carry an ecological message.

When the American artist presented Big Family at the Burning Man Festival in 2007, it featured an oil derrick at its center, representing the god of the present. “The intention was to show our pursuit of oil and how it affects the economy and the environment of almost every culture in the world. Even societies that do not consume oil are affected by greed and dependence on oil.”
