Lixo Zero: Actions reduce the impact of waste in the Ibiti Project

January 10, 2025

Towards Zero Waste: Vila Mogol has a Selective Collection Point and Waste Center. And what do you do with your waste?

The concept of "Zero Waste" challenges us to rethink what it means to discard something. From the planet's point of view, there is no "out". Every time we throw something away, we need to consider the consequences and the amount of waste we are generating.

Ibiti Projeto recently took an important step towards implementing the Zero Waste project in the Vila do Mogol community with the inauguration of the Selective Collection Point. The project not only encourages correct disposal, but also inspires environmental awareness throughout the community. Engenho Lodge also cultivates the habit of separating waste and has a compost garbage can in operation.

Life School students are part of this movement: they created a compost bin and took part in discussions with Ibiti biologist Clarine Maranho about responsibility in waste generation. These actions reinforce Ibiti's commitment to environmental education and sustainable practices that have a positive impact on nature and the local quality of life.

Mogol Waste Center: Where waste becomes opportunity

Another initiative, the Mogol Waste Center, is fully operational. The space is responsible for sorting and properly disposing of recyclable materials, reducing the volume of waste destined for landfills. According to Valdinei Nogueira, known as Xarope, who is responsible for sorting at the Center, the work is a challenge: "The ideal is for people not to mix up the waste. We have to think about the future, about what we're going to leave our grandchildren. At the Central, I sort glass, cans and paper. And it all goes to Lima Duarte Town Hall."

Special participation

During the Central's inauguration in September 2024, the event was attended by Tião Santos, renowned waste picker and president of ACAMJG, who gained international prominence in the documentary Extraordinary Trashnominated for an Oscar in 2011. Tião shared his experience and highlighted the social and environmental impact of waste sorting initiatives: "When you sort your waste, you help the environment and create opportunities for people who make a living from recycling, like me. It's an attitude that transforms lives."

Also present was Rodrigo Oliveira, founding partner of Impacta Consultoria de Sustentabilidade and a specialist in Zero Waste practices. Rodrigo brought practical insights into how small changes in everyday life can have big impacts: "Adopting the Zero Waste concept is an exercise in citizenship. Every piece of waste you separate is a choice for a better future."
