Even torn, faded, or marked by time, they continue to carry stories, affections, and irreplaceable moments. Instead of discarding them, what if it were possible to transform them into something new, without erasing what they have already lived through?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is from this idea that Tecendo Mem\u00f3rias (Weaving Memories) was born, an initiative of the Ibiti Project that invites residents of surrounding communities to give new meaning to pieces of clothing through visible mending, a technique known internationally as visible mending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than just fixing things, the invitation is to make the repair visible and to value the journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project&#039;s starting point comes from a memory of Renato Machado, the creator of the Ibiti Project, who used to ask Dona Odette, the cook at the sugar mill, to repeatedly mend a pair of shorts he loved, prolonging their life to the very end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exchange of knowledge<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/ibiti.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8789\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ibiti.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01.webp 900w, https:\/\/ibiti.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01-300x300.webp 300w, https:\/\/ibiti.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01-150x150.webp 150w, https:\/\/ibiti.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01-768x768.webp 768w, https:\/\/ibiti.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/01-12x12.webp 12w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The project involves students from the Fashion Design course at UniAcademia, in Juiz de Fora, who will share ancestral repair techniques with the community of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Lopes, creating a real space for exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students explore references from different parts of the world:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>o <em>mending<\/em>, from England<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>o <em>sashiko<\/em> and <em>boron<\/em>, from Japan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>o <em>kantha<\/em>, from India<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and himself <em>visible mending<\/em>, in its contemporary approach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the presentations, students and registered community members participate together in a workshop on darning and creating with fabric scraps, promoting an encounter between tradition and innovation in handcrafting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Workshop Weaving Memories<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Date: <strong>May 16<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Location: <strong>Community Center of S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Lopes<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Time:<strong> starting at 9:30 am<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop, led by Let\u00edcia Nogueira Fonseca, coordinator of the Linhas de Minas project from the community itself, will be dedicated to teaching exposed patching techniques, with guidance on how to preserve the original fabric while incorporating new threads and materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, the community contest will take place on June 20th, open to residents with proven residency in villages, districts, and centers of the following municipalities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lima Duarte<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saint Rita of Ibitipoca<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pottery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pedro Teixeira<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weaving Memories Contest<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Date: <strong>June 20th<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Location: <strong>Casa do Sol \u2014 S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 dos Lopes<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong> Time:<strong> starting at 3pm<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSe-1oAObZL5eZ0W0im0zaB7OLKSy99RucUEy3WrbRZWxl0Fmg\/viewform?usp=publish-editor\">Click here to register.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants must present mended garments using creative interventions that keep the original history of the fabric visible. The selected garments will be exhibited to the public and evaluated by a jury of experts in fashion, design, and the arts. The three best creations will be awarded prizes and will become part of the Ibiti Project&#039;s cultural collection, contributing to the preservation of the textile memory of the communities involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Awards<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udd47 1st place: R$ 3.000<br>\ud83e\udd48 2nd place: R$ 2.000<br>\ud83e\udd49 3rd place: R$ 1,000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Culture, memory and regeneration<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By extending the life of clothing and valuing personal narratives, the initiative strengthens community ties and promotes new ways of looking at what already exists and can continue to tell stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Raquel Salgado, an architect and fashion design professor at UniAcademia in Juiz de Fora, and one of the organizers of the initiative, &quot;The idea is to value mending, to remake the weaving as a gesture of care for the garment and for memory.
